World Heritage Sites in Okinawa: Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu

Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu” is the official name of the World Heritage sites in Okinawa. It was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2000.

The ruins of Shuri Castle, Tamaudun, Sonohyan Utaki Stone Gate, Shikinaen Garden, Sefa Utaki, Nakijin Castle Ruins, Zakimi Castle Ruins, Katsuren Castle Ruins, and Nakagusuku Castle Ruins are all nine heritage sites.

Nakijin Castle Ruins, Zakimi Castle Ruins, Katsuren Castle Ruins, and Nakagusuku Castle Ruins are from the era of conflict between the three mountains. Shurijo Castle Ruins, Tamaudun, Sonohyan Utaki Stone Gate, Shikinaen, and Sefa Utaki are the ruins of the era after Ryukyu was unified and the Ryukyu Dynasty was established.

These heritage sites are thought to symbolize the unique history and culture of the Ryukyu Kingdom, which was located between Japan and China.

Shuri Castle Ruins

This is the castle ruins of successive Ryukyu kings in Shuri near Naha.
The current Shuri Castle is a restored one.

Tamaudun

This is a tomb site of the Ryukyu King built in 1501.
During World War II, it was attacked by the American army and suffered considerable damage, but was later repaired.

Sonohyan Utaki Stone Gate

This stone gate is located between Shurijo Castle and Shureimon Gate.
It is said that the Ryukyu king prayed for a safe trip when he left the castle.

Shikinaen Garden

It is a strolling garden that combines Ryukyu and Chinese garden techniques.

Nakagusuku Castle Ruins

A mountain castle that is said to have been built in the 15th century. The masonry is wonderful.
It features beautiful arches.

Sefa Utaki

Nakijin Castle Ruins

A large castle ruin in the northern part of the main island of Okinawa.
Beautiful stone walls are attractive.

Zakimi Castle Ruins
