Kamikochi

Japan’s Mountain Paradise

Introduction

Kamikochi is a scenic valley in the Japanese Northern Alps. It is part of the Chubu Sangaku National Park in Nagano Prefecture. This area offers breathtaking views of mountains, pristine rivers, and lush forests.

The Beauty of Kamikochi

The Azusa River flows through Kamikochi, creating stunning landscapes. The Hotaka Mountains and Yake peaks frame the valley. These sights are especially beautiful from the Kappa Bridge. It is a popular spot for photos. When it is crowded, you have to wait in line, though.

Getting Kamikochi

Private vehicles are not allowed to preserve its natural beauty. Access is by bus (including tour bus) or taxi from Matsumoto, Takayama, or Hirayu Onsen. Tourists from Tokyo and other cities will be concentrated on the Matsumoto side. It is better to take a bus or taxi from Takayama or Hirayu Onsen, as there is less waiting time during busy times.

Tours

Tours usually depart from Nagano, Matsumoto or Takayama. Japan Alps Kamikochi Day Hike with Government-Licensed Guide starts from Kamikochi Bus Terminal. So you need to go there by public transport to join the tour.
